Isola Comacina Foundation

Isola Comacina is an archaeological site whose importance goes beyond its local borders, so much so that it was considered to be one of the most interesting areas in northern Italy during the early Middle Ages.

In 1919 the island was given to Belgium, in homage to King Albert I, who bequeathed it to Italy.The island was then donated to the Accademia di belle Arti di Brera, which in 1940 set up the Isola Comacina Foundation.

The objective of the Foundation was, originally, to build a village for artists; today the Foundation continues to operate in the name of its original mission and aims to protect the location’s natural beauty, enhance the archaeological heritage and promote a programme of cultural and artistic activities on the island.

Amongst the numerous initiatives of the Foundation there is also a competition dedicated to artists from all over the world, the prize is twelve “residences” on the island for a two week period from May through to September.
